ITD ::: How to Customize Icons on Windows XP ?


There are different ways to customize icons on Windows XP. The method to change the desktop items like My Documents and Recycle Bin is different from the method to change the icons of specific folders. There is a different way to customize the icons regular file types, While you customize icons on Windows XP, you can also change the icons for application shortcuts.  
How to change Recycle Bin, My Documents and My Computer icons?
 Right-click anywhere on the desktop.
Select Properties from the list.
 Display Properties dialog box will appear. Choose the Desktop tab.
Click on the Customize Desktop button under the Desktop tab

Desktop Items dialog box will appear. Select the icon you want to change.
Click on the Change Icon button.

 Click on the Browse button, and select the icon file you like.

Click on the OK button.
How to Change Icons for Specific Folders?
 Right-click on the folder for which you want to change the icon.
Select Properties from the menu.
 Choose the Customize tab.

Click on the Change Icon.
Choose an icon from the given list and click on the OK button.
However, you can't change the icon for every folder by using this method. For example, you can't change the icon for a Windows folder like this.  
How to Change Icons for Regular File Types ?
You can change the icons for the .txt files as well. You just have to follow these steps:
 Open any Windows Explorer like Hard Drive C.
Click on Tools.
 Select Folder Options in the Tools menu.

Click on the File Types tab.

Select the file type you would like to change.
Click on the Advanced button.
You will see the 'Edit File Type' dialog box. Click on the Change Icon button.

Choose an icon from the given options.
Click on the OK button.
You should not use this method to change the icons for drives or folders. Also, there are a couple of file types which will not allow you to change icons in this way.
How to Change Icons for Application Shortcuts?
You can change the icon for any application shortcut on the desktop, quick launch or the start menu.
 Right-click on the application shortcut.
Select Properties.
 Choose the Shortcut tab in the next dialog box that appears.
 Click on the Change Icon button.

 Select the icon you prefer.
 Click on the OK button.
These are a few easy methods to customize the icons on Windows XP. In addition to changing the icons of specific folders, application shortcuts etc. manually, special soft wares are available which allow you to change almost all the icons in your XP computer. You can download many icons using the soft wares and save them in a folder.
